Description

The philosophy of Oloika Lodges

As we are a Kenyan and Dutch family with a long history in Kenya and Tanzania. With our accommodation, we try not to distance ourselves and our guests from the local community. For this reason also we build in the local style that blends with the surrounding environment. This has the added advantage that we can employ local artisans to build the lodges, which stimulates the local economy and supports the use of valuable local knowledge. We feel to travel is to meet people, and so we support visits to local communities, festivities and activities. We also suggest our guests to ask for local dishes, and organise for these dishes to be cooked locally if required, with the best of fresh ingredients, by the women and men of the village.

Living within a local environment

Building is both a potentially creative and destructive activity. We aim to reduce our impact on the environment by using local materials, thus reducing the need for transport. We preferably use locally produced wood and timber for construction that we can regrow, and we do this on part of our land. We try to reduce the consumption of cement and other imported products, and by building in the local style, local materials can be used the production of which provides an income to men and women in the nearby villages. We refrain from using tarmac or cement for our roads and paths. Of course, this makes for difficult going sometimes…

Living within the local community

The people we employ are all from around, and we care about the well being of the community around us as we would at home. We feel we are guests ourselves, and paying guests at that, and so we assist the local school, community group or village.
