This afternoon, fly from Nairobi’s Wilson Airport to the Mara, where you are met at the airstrip by Mara Porini staff. Drive to the camp in the exclusive wildlife conservancy of Ol Kinyei, one of the most beautiful wilderness areas in the Serengeti-Mara ecosystem.

Ol Kinyei belongs to Maasai communities who recently set aside the conservancy as a sanctuary for wildlife. • Ol Kinyei Conservancy / Nairobi / Lake Manyara, Tanzania

During a morning walk with Maasai warriors, you learn more about life in the bush, before returning to the airstrip for your flight to Nairobi, where you connect with the onward flight to Kilimanjaro. After clearing Immigration and Customs, you are met by a Big Five representative before taking a regional flight to Lake Manyara. Your guide waits at the airstrip to take you to Manyara Ranch, a 35,000-acre wildlife conservancy in the corridor between Tarangire and Manyara National Parks.

Originally established as a cattle ranch during Tanzania's colonial period, Manyara Ranch remains an operating ranch with a relatively small herd of beef cattle and black-headed sheep. In 2000, the African Wildlife Foundation (AWF) obtained management and conservation rights to the ranch to protect these vital wildlife corridors. In so doing, they established a working relationship with the Maasai community, developing conservation projects and rehabilitating the ranch itself.

The ranch is held in trust by the Tanzania Land Conservation Trust (TLCT) for the benefit of the local communities and Tanzania.

  • Days 8/9: Manyara Ranch Conservancy

Enjoy activities at the ranch today. The conservancy provides guided bush walks, day and night game drives, visits to partner villages (in an authentic setting) and activities including horseback riding with big game and bush breakfasts and dinners. You can also participate in research activities that promote the on-going conservation projects in collaboration with the African Wildlife Foundation. There are several large dams on the ranch that attract and help retain the wildlife within the conservancy area.

There is a significant resident population of wildlife including groups of large bull elephants, breeding herds of giraffe, many lesser kudu, wildebeest, zebra, gazelle, oryx and eland. There are also predators, including lion, cheetah, leopard, hyena, jackal and bat-eared foxes. For many years, wild dogs have denned on the ranch.

The resident game population is continually being increased by wildlife moving through the migratory corridors. There are large numbers of bird species, including many raptors. Manyara Ranch has a variety of habitats, which include open savannah, acacia woodland, bush and riverine forest. These habitats support a large diversity of wildlife.
