Description

The Marangu Route is the most popular route up Mount Kilimanjaro, and also considerably easier than any of the other trips to the summit. Climbers usually cover the 34km each way over a period of at least four or five nights on the mountain, making use of three stages of wooden huts for overnight accommodation en route.

  • Arusha to Marangu gate (1860m) to Mandara hut (2700m)

Early morning after breakfast depart to Marangu gate on the eastern side of Kilimanjaro for registration and trekking guidelines. Walking through rain forest to Mandara hut, about 8kms that will take almost 3-4 hours. A side trip to Maundi crater will prove you a panoramic spectacular view surroundings of Northern Tanzania and Kenya.

Through mountain forest you will enjoy to see bird life, Colobus monkey and eucalyptus tree species. Recommended to eat and drink well to compensate the lost water through sweating. Shorts and t-shirt usually will suffice at this altitude but you have to keep your rain gear and warm clothes in your day-pack just in case. You will stop for lunch in halfway through your trek before continue to Mandara hut.

  • Mandara hut (2740m) to Horombo hut (3690m)

Rise in the morning for breakfast, and then keep on ascending searching for Horombo huts cover the distance about 12kms almost in 5-6 hours. Your trek begins through ascending tropical rain forest glades before ascending through heath land and on into the open moorland, where vegetation is sparse with small shrubs. Stop halfway for lunch overlooking the view of Mawenzi. You will arrive at Horombo huts around 3pm.

  • Acclimatization

You may begin to feel the effects of altitude at Horombo, this is why Tai Adventures & Safaris uses this day as an aid to your acclimatization. Depend on how you are feeling, your guide will recommend whether to stay in hut or hiking up to Mawenzi base camp and return to Horombo huts for the second night.

  • Horombo huts (3690m) to Kibo huts (4695m)

Waking up early morning and capture some beautiful memorable pictures with the spectacular view of glacier Kibo summit. After breakfast proceeding on trekking to Kibo huts whereby we will cover about 8kms for almost 3-4 hours. The day trek begins through the heath land and quickly turn into moonscape when you enter the saddle between Kibo and Mawenzi. Stop over in the mid of the journey for lunch, whereby you will start to see the summit and prepare your body to face.

  • Summit - Kibo huts (4695m) to Uhuru peak (5895m) to Horombo

Rise up early in the mid-night for summit ascent. Start trekking around 1am aiming to summit at 7am in the morning. From Kibo huts to Uhuru peak will take the distance of 4kms about 6-7 hours to reach the peak. From Gill-mans point you will normally encounter snow all the way up to Uhuru peak (5895m), the highest point in Africa. Total exhilaration and satisfaction you made it.

Weather conditions on the summit will determine how long you will be able to spend, taking photographs, before the 3 hour descent back to Kibo hut. After a short rest you gather all your gear you left behind for the ascent and head down to Horombo hut (3 hours) for your overnight. The return to Horombo hut will seem surprisingly fast compared to the ascent. The total time spent walking on this day is around 14hours, so be prepared for a very tough day. Later in the evening you enjoy your last dinner on the mountain and a well earned sleep.
