Description

This is a Uganda Culture-experiential safari. Your safari starts in Kampala – the capital city where you get to visit the city in a tour that will be both cultural, religious and historical. From Kampala, you will go east to Mbale where you will meet the Ugandans who grow Arabica Coffee. From Mbale, you will head to Nsenyi Village via Lake Mburo National Park where you get immersed in village life. You finish with a Gorilla tracking/trekking experience and a visit to Queen Elizabeth N.P.

  • Arrival in Uganda

You arrive at Entebbe International Airport, located on a peninsula that juts out into Lake Victoria, where a representative or your driver/guide from Uzuri Uganda Safaris will welcome you to the Pearl of Africa and transfer you to Cassia Lodge, Kampala for your overnight stay.

  • Kampala City Tour

This morning, you enjoy breakfast and head our for the Kampala city tour. The tour is a mix of cultural, historical and religious sites that are embedded in the fabric of Uganda’s cultural and political history. The cultural sites visited belong to Uganda’s largest ethnic group. The Baganda/BUganda kingdom was the largest when early European explorers came to Africa and the kingdom, which survives today (no political power) held a central place in Uganda’s political and social history.

However, when you get to the Uganda Museum, you will get to see the entire country’s cultural history and heritage. The guide will brief you on what to expect. You will enjoy lunch enroute. The tour will end with a visit to the crafts village for you to purchase some souvenirs or simply look at the local art and crafts. Later, you will be returned to your accommodation (Cassia Lodge) for dinner and overnight stay or you will visit the Ndere Centre for a cultural performance if it is a Sunday evening!

  • Drive to Mbale via Source of the Nile

This morning, you enjoy breakfast and drive to Mbale town via Jinja. Driving along the Kampala – Jinja highway, your first stop is the Ssezibwa Falls. This is a cultural heritage site of the Baganda. It is rich with traditional folklore as shall be narrated by the site guide! Other than the cultural aspect, the falls are quite spectacular, surrounded by beautiful lush scenery. There are plenty of birds and some wildlife such as monkeys that may be sighted in the nearby forest. Spend roughly an hour exploring these serene grounds before returning to the highway.

From Ssezibwa Falls, continue to Jinja through Mabira Forest – the largest natural forest in central Uganda. Head straight to the Jinja Sailing Club where you will enjoy lunch. After lunch take a boat ride from the shores of the Nile to the exact spot where the Nile waters start to flow to the Mediterranean. Return to your vehicle and complete the drive to Mbale town - arriving in the evening. Overnight at Mbale Resort Hotel.

  • Visit Sipi Falls, Coffee Community Walk

After your breakfast this morning, you drive to Kapchorwa via the Sironko-Mbale road headed to Sipi. Sipi Falls is a series of three waterfalls in the district of Kapchorwa, northeast of Sironko and Mbale. The waterfalls lie on the edge of Mount Elgon National Park near the Kenyan border. The Sipi Falls area is the starting point for many hikes up Mt. Elgon. You will walk to the base of the falls and relax as well as get bathed in the misty spray that is created by the falls.

If you do not mind, you can take a dip in the cool waters. You will then check-in at Sipi Falls Lodge and enjoy lunch. After lunch, you will go on a coffee community walk where you get to see how coffee is grown, processed and how it impacts the local people. Later, return to the lodge for overnight.

  • Drive to Lake Mburo National Park

After your early breakfast at 6.30am this morning, you will begin your drive to Lake Mburo National Park. You will enjoy lunch either in Kampala or the Equator crossing at Kayabwe en-route. At the Equator you will perform a simple experiment to experience the magnetic tropical balance, have a look at the traditional drums and crafts being made.

After your lunch (you will enjoy local food), traveling southwest, you will arrive in Lake Mburo National Park – an extension of the Tanzanian plains with big herds of zebra, impala, eland and other ungulates. You arrive in the early evening and head to your lodge (Eagles Nest Lodge Mburo). Dinner and overnight at your lodge.

  • Game drive & drive to Nshenyi Village

After your breakfast this morning, you can choose to go on either a game drive or a nature walk in the park. Lake Mburo National Park is one of two game parks in Uganda where visitors are allowed to go for a bush walk with an experienced ranger. When you go on a nature walk in Mburo, it is exciting to approach wildlife at such close range. After your game drive or nature walk, you will exit the park and drive to Nshenyi Cultural Village.

Traditionally, Nshenyi is a pastoralist area. The terrain is characterised by endless rolling hills, savanna grass and acacia trees, an environment that is ideal for rearing cattle. There are also large tracts of banana plantations and a variety of subsistence and commercial crops on many farms in the area. You will enjoy lunch at Igongo Cultural Centre and Museum in Mbarara town en-route. Dinner and overnight at Nshenyi Cultural Village.

  • All Day at Nshenyi Cultural Village

Over the next two days, you will experience the traditional lifestlye of Banyankole people. Through the various activities, you will be be immersed in the local Nkole culture through nature walks, visiting homesteads, local schools, walk through the local markets and visit with the Batwa pottery makers. You can also walk along the Kagera River and cross into Tanzania and Rwanda.

Other activities that you will take part in include cattle grazing & milking of the Ankole long-horned cattle, processing of ghee, cooking in a typical local home, village walks, traditional music and dance, an uphill hike to visit farmers who harvest honey from the caves and rocks surrounding the hills and bird watching among other activities. By the end of your stay at Nshenyi village, you will have experienced the Ankole culture in a fantastic African village setting. All meals and overnight at Nshenyi Cultural Village.

  • Drive to Lake Bunyonyi

After breakfast this morning, you say goodbye to Nshenyi Cultural Village – headed to the beautiful and picturesque Lake Bunyonyi. Lake Bunyonyi is a good place to chill out, relax and read a book or simply go out on a canoe or motorized boat tour of some of the 29 islets that create the scenic appeal of the lake. Options of things to do include: canoeing/boating, swimming (this is recommended for strong swimmers), birding, nature walks & hikes and cultural visits. Overnight at Bunyonyi Overland Resort.

  • Gorilla tracking & return to Bunyonyi

Get up at 6.00am and enjoy your breakfast. After breakfast, you transfer to the Ruhiija gate of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. Here, you are allocated a gorilla family in groups of 8 people/trackers as well as a gorilla trekking guide with armed rangers. After a briefing, you are led or driven to the trail-head for the start of a thrilling encounter. Expect to walk/hike for between 2 and 8 hours in steep and sometimes muddy conditions, which can be tough and requires a degree of (average) fitness.

However, the thrill of meeting a large Mountain Gorilla family led by a huge Silverback completely makes up for the effort. When you finally locate the gorilla family that you are tracking, sit in the forest among the gorillas, listening to them grumble to each other, and marvel at the sheer size of the dominant male - the Silverback. It is an extraordinary feeling sitting in the dense forest in the knowledge you are in the presence of the few remaining Mountain Gorillas in the wild.

  • Drive to Queen Elizabeth NP

After your breakfast, you commence your drive to Queen Elizabeth National Park via the Ishasha sector – home to the famous tree-climbing lions. If it is a hot day, be sure to find them atop the sycamore fig trees or the acacia trees that dominate this part of the park. There are about 4 Prides of lions in the area numbering more than 40 in total. Look out for the males with their black mane, which is a notable attribute. You enjoy lunch at a lodge in Ishasha.

You continue to Mweya where you will exit the park and head to Simba Safari Camp for check-in. At 5.00pm, you visit the Katwe crater lake to meet the Ugandans who mine for salt in the lake. The lake, which is situated just north of the impressive Mweya peninsula, is far too salty to support any wildlife. However, since the 16th Century, it has ensured the survival of the Katwe residents, who spend their days under the equatorial sun, harvesting salt from its milky waters. When you return, dinner and overnight at Simba Safari Camp.

  • Game drive & boat safari along Kazinga channel

Up at 6.00am, enjoy your breakfast and we are off for a day-break game drive on the park’s Kasenyi plains. The Kasenyi plains offer a great safari experience, with the opportunity to see lions, Uganda kob, hyena, elephant, warthog, waterbuck and possibly even the elusive leopard all with the stunning Rwenzori Mountains as a backdrop. You will then take your packed lunch on the Crater Explosion drive enjoying beautiful views of the enormous craters, the Rift Valley Escarpment and Lakes Edward and George and the Kazinga Channel below.

After lunch we’ll head back down and you will take the 2-hour boat cruise along the Kazinga Channel, a natural channel that connects lakes Edward and George – one of the major highlights of your safari. On the cruise abundant bird life is sighted and perhaps the highest concentration of hippopotamus in Africa lives on this stretch of the channel. You return to your accommodation (Simba Safari Camp) for dinner and overnight stay.

  • Drive to Kampala

After breakfast today, you commence your drive Kampala. Travelling via Mbarara, you will have a chance to view the scenic valley below at the rift valley escarpment. You will stop for lunch in Mbarara at the Igongo Cultural Centre & Museum. After lunch you continue to Kampala and as you approach Kampala, you will make a stop-over at the Equator Crossing, where the imaginary line that divides the earth into two halves passes.

Here you do fun photos, buy your Uganda safari souvenir and complete the drive to Kampala and head to Eden Lawn (it is advisable that you return to Kampala on a Sunday evening to be able to attend Ndere Troupe’s Cultural performance). With this performance, you will take in the different Uganda cultural performances by a world-known music and dance troupe! Later you will be dropped back at Hotel Eden Lawn Hotel for overnight stay.

  • Drive to Entebbe & Departure

After your breakfast this morning, you check-out and drive to the Uganda Crafts Village. Here you can buy a souvenir or Uganda coffee at the nearby 1000 Cups shop. At leisure, you will drive to Entebbe. If your flight is later in the evening, there are a lot of activities you can do to kill the time including visiting a snake park, the botanical gardens, the zoo or simply relax at one of the numerous beaches where you can enjoy a whole tilapia lunch. At the appropriate time, your driver/guide will drop you off at the airport in time for you to check-in for your onward flight home.
