Description

This 8-day Great Apes safari will take you to Ngamba Island Chimpanzee Sanctuary offshore, Kibale Forest National Park, considered the primate capital of the world, Queen Elizabeth National Park and finally the home of the Mountain Gorillas in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park - all the time enjoying forest and Savannah scenery.

  • Arrival in Uganda

You arrive at Entebbe International Airport, located on a peninsula that juts out into Lake Victoria where a representative or a driver/guide from Uzuri Uganda Safaris will welcome you Uganda and transfer you to Eureka Place Hotel, Kampala - located in Ntinda, a Kampala suburb.

  • Drive to Kibale Forest National Park

At 7.00am, with your breakfast out of the way, you will be met by your driver/guide who will brief you on what to expect as you transfer to Kibale Forest National Park - the number one primate destination in Africa. With your bags packed and already in the safari van, commence your transfer to Kibale Forest National Park.

The journey will take you through the lush green countryside on the Mityana-Mubende road to Fort portal. In the afternoon, you will visit the crater region and then in the evening, complete your transfer to Kibale Forest National Park for overnight stay at Kibale Forest Camp.

  • Track Chimps & transfer to Queen Elizabeth NP

After breakfast, you will head to the Park headquarters at Kanyachu for a briefing by the head ranger. You will then head into the forest for a half day search for the chimpanzees and a lot of other primates. The guide will provide detailed explanations, not only on primates, but also on all the forest fauna and flora and will ensure that your walk is both informative and enjoyable.

You will return to your lodge for lunch and then transfer to Queen Elizabeth National park where you will spend the night. Overnight stay and dinner at Marafiki Safari Lodge.

  • Chimp tracking in Kyambura & boat cruise along Kazinga channel

After an early breakfast, you will head out to the Kyambura Gorge for chimpanzee trekking. This gorge has several primates that include chimpanzees, red-tailed monkey, black and white colobus monkeys, velvet monkeys, baboons among others. The only family/community of chimpanzees in Kyambura gorge though mobile has been habituated for chimpanzee trekking.

A chimpanzee trekking walk in the gorge exposes you to both flora and fauna and is a complement to those that visit Queen Elizabeth National Park for other activities such as game drives and boat cruises. After trekking you will return to your lodge for lunch. After lunch, you will head out for an afternoon boat trip on the Kazinga channel – the channel links lakes Edward and George, for game viewing and bird watching – a key highlight of your safari.

  • Game drive & drive to Bwindi Impenetrable NP

Begin your day with a cup of coffee/tea. You will then head out for an early morning game drive along the Kasenyi and Queens Mile. On the game drive, you will encounter elephants, buffaloes, water bucks, warthogs, lions, Uganda Kob and a variety of birds.

Return to the lodge for breakfast and transfer to Bwindi through the Isasha sector. After you have exited the park, you will drive on a good tarmac road headed to Bwindi. The landscape changes the further south you travel as the highlands become even more steeper. You arrive in Bwindi late in the evening and you check into Gorilla Valley Lodge for dinner and overnight stay.

  • Gorilla tracking & transfer to Lake Bunyonyi

Up at 6.00am, enjoy a hearty breakfast to give you the energy you will need to track the famed Mountain Gorillas in the Bwindi mists. With your packed lunch, your guide will take you to the ranger station before 8:00 am for briefing by one of the rangers. Once the formalities are done, you will begin the trek - the guides leading you through the bush, pushing your way through the undergrowth, parting thick creepers, to track the gorillas. (the trek can take from half an hour to 5 hours – a reasonable degree of fitness is required as well as a sturdy pair of walking shoes).

Sit in the forest among the gorillas, listening to them grumble, and marvel at the sheer size of the dominant male; the Silverback. It is an extraordinary feeling sitting in the dense rainforest knowing you are with a few of the last remaining Mountain Gorillas. Back at the starting point, your guide will be waiting to transfer you to Lake Bunyonyi on an enjoyable scenic drive. Overnight at Birdnest Bunyonyi.

  • Drive to Entebbe

After breakfast, you can opt for a quick tour of some of Lake Bunyonyi’s beautiful islands or straight away begin your journey back to Kampala with a stopover at Igongo Culture Center and Museum for lunch and the Equator crossing for some fun photo shoots and a visit to the crafts village. Dinner and overnight at Gately Inn Entebbe.

  • Visit Ngamba Chimp Sanctuary & Departure

After an early breakfast, you will be transferred to the Water Front at Entebbe where you will take a boat ride to Ngamba Island (23km) – the Chimpanzee Sanctuary. Upon arrival at Ngamba Island, you will be welcomed by the duty caregiver of the Chimpanzees. Pre-arranged supplementary feeding times (11.00 am & 3.00 pm each day) brings the chimpanzees within meters of the raised walkway specially designed for easy viewing and provides excellent photographic opportunities.

After having lunch you will take a boat ride back to Entebbe. Your guide will drop you off at the airport in time to catch your flight to your next destination.
